Hello there!
Do you remember your childhood and growing up? Silly question I guess if your actually 10 years old and still growing.
Ok let’s start again….
Growing up is the one experience we all have in common.
But we are not all the same.
And that in a nutshell is what’s behind much of the halfling project.
The one key common denominator is we all do grow older and we all develop and change.
We start with different level’s of advantage or hurdles to climb be they physical, mental or environmental.
My work with young performers quickly showed a high level of those on the autistic spectrum, or who had been or even were still being bullied or often through ignorance of the situation simply not understood.
A high level of youth crime builds via poor social care and mental well being.
But still the vast majority of young people enjoy life, achieve through hard work and efforts excellence - whatever their individual hurdles and make for a bright future.
Halfpenny halfling - to give it it’s full title is a positive project - looking not just at potential hurdles and pitfalls, but also the many success’s with young people today. Whilst it will not ignore issues and at times be critical - the important element is to make it fun to be involved or to view.
This might explain you may think the “Lord of the Rings” references and performance styled photo shoots.
More likely it’s because it’s how I work and as a photographer I strongly believe in the power of images. Image scenario’s are often set to build up personal self confidence and range with young performers.
The halfling project is a long term on and offline work - what you are currently seeing is early versions and ideas which will build over time.
